Joseph Holt Ltd

Joseph Holt is an independent family brewery founded in central Manchester in 1849. With over 170 years of rich history, our brewery has remained family-owned for six generations.

During this time, we’ve created strong ties with people across the North West and put communities at the heart of everything we do. We have 125 pubs, stretching from Manchester and Cheshire to Lancashire, Merseyside and into Derbyshire. In 40 of our pubs, we serve quality food alongside our award-winning beers. We also have a thriving free trade business where we supply our award-winning beer to hundreds of venues, bars and restaurants across the UK.

Brewing high quality beer is at the core of our business. It has been since the start and will be into the future. We’re proud to say that our brewery is one of a handful in the world to have won 5 gold medals at the International Brewing Awards. And with three Master Brewers in our ranks, our brewery is packed full of talent and quality, meaning Joseph Holt beer is in the best hands.

From our Victorian premises, we now brew a wide range of beer styles. From our famous Joseph Holt Bitter and Mild, to premium lagers, pale ales, golden ales and dark beers. Not content with our well-established beers, we continue to innovate and brew new beers, including Trailblazer Stout, which has gone on to be a roaring success! We also have our own Bootleg microbrewery producing the likes of Chorlton Pale Ale and American IPA.

Catering for all types, our beer comes packaged in cask, keg, bottles and cans. We also package our beer in 5L mini kegs which are available from the Holts at Home online shop.

We’re also incredibly proud of our century-old charity roots within the region. Back in the early 1900s, Sir Edward Holt helped set up funds, raise money, buy equipment and premises for the Manchester and District Radium Institute. The institute, known as The Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute today, has become a world-leader in cancer research and treatment. Our brewery has carried on the legacy and still raises significant sums for charity to this day.

Our history and heritage is incredibly important to us – we’re proud of our roots and who we are. We want to continue to bring our unique family brewery to new audiences across the North West and further afield, so they can experience the Joseph Holt way.

You can find much more information about our pubs, beers, history and charity work on our website. You can also find exciting job opportunities and buy our famous beer from the Holts at Home shop.

Run a pub with Joseph Holt

The Joseph Holt pub estate currently consists of 125 houses, which continues to evolve and grow – this means we’re always looking for good, new managers. We’ve got a wide range of pubs from busy city centre inns to countryside food houses, and all that go in-between, meaning there’s a pub to suit everyone.

We have three different routes of how you can become a Joseph Holt pub manager:

  • - A salaried pub manager
  • - A self-employed retail partner
  • - Tenant

Retail Partners

This gives you the opportunity to develop your own business, with the full help and support of Joseph Holt behind you. Essentially you have the same support and guidance as a managed house, but you run the business side yourself. Before you become a retail partner, we ensure the interior and exterior of the pub are of a sufficient standard and it remains our responsibility for on-going building repairs. We also retain ownership of the fixtures and fittings, the stock for resale and all the running costs of the pub, such as electric, gas, water, utilities and marketing.

Tenancy

Our tenancy arrangement is perfect for those who prefer to work on their own initiative with the freedom to run their pub the way they want. It can be highly cost-effective proposition, while you still have the option of full central business support, including bill qualification, personal license application, plus cellar management training. It all adds up to the sort of rewarding experience you would expect working with a leading family brewery.

One thing all our pubs have in common is a commitment to the very highest standards of service, which start with the pub manager. In return we offer competitive financial packages, a high level of job satisfaction and full support and training whenever it’s needed.

If you think you’d like to manage one of our pubs, please contact us on cv@joseph-holt.com
